Bold labels are required.
Failure to properly intubate a patient can result in life-long physical and mental challenges, or even wrongful death due to hypoxia or anoxia. Intubation is not required only for situations requiring anesthesia. Many patients require intubation for ventilation or to aid breathing.
Unfortunately, some patients in need of oxygen suffer permanent brain damage or even death due to medical malpractice. At the Pittsburgh law firm of Biancheria & Maliver P.C., the experienced lawyers understand the significant impact that negligent failure to properly intubate can have on patients and their families.
We strive to hold medical professionals accountable for their negligence. Contact the firm to schedule a free case analysis and consultation with attorney and board-certified physician Deborah Maliver.
Negligent Failure to Intubate and Failure to Properly Intubate
The purpose of intubation is to ensure a patient receives an adequate supply of oxygen to the blood to avoid injury to the brain and to other vital organs. Though it is a routine procedure, problems may arise in the process of intubation, or doctors may be negligent in their failure to intubate a patient. Either can cause disabling injuries or death.
Poor intubation may cause an insufficient supply of oxygen to the patient, which could lead to catastrophic brain damage. Further, a mistake during intubation may cause air to be pumped into the stomach instead of into the lungs, resulting in death to the patient.
In some cases, negligent intubation is caused by hospital staff being untrained or unprepared to quickly work through life-threatening situations. Though all medical facilities are obligated to have the proper equipment and staff on site, some do not. When medical staff fails to act in time, is unprepared, or does not call the appropriate physicians, surgeons and respiratory professionals, patients may suffer permanent disability, coma or even death.
